Reykjavik Talent Lab

The Reykjavik Talent Lab is for young talents who want to meet up with other like-minded individuals in Reykjavík and make first hand contact with film producers and other professionals for help and consulting on your first feature film.

This years Talent Lab will run from the 29th of September until the 3rd of October.

Four action packed days, during which you will participate in masterclasses and discussions with well established names in the film industry. Education and entertainment will go hand in hand. The schedule is stuffed with great films, workshops, events and seminars.

The Golden Egg

Participants have the opportunity of submitting their short films to the Golden Egg competition. The Golden Egg is an award given to young and aspiring talents. The films selected for The Golden Egg competition will be screened in the festivals official program.

The films submitted for The Golden Egg should be no longer than 30 minutes long and made after January 1st, 2014. A jury will select a number of films for the Competition. You can upload it to Vimeo and send us the link when you apply.

The Process

The threefold motto of RIFF “Innovation, Networking, Dialogue” is perfectly manifested in the activities of the Talent Lab: the Lab highlights and promotes the innovative works of young filmmakers, fosters and facilitates the networking necessary to promote their work to buyers and distributors, and gives them an opportunity to participate in a dialogue and exchange ideas and thoughts with young people from across the World.

The Program

The program of Reykjavik Talent Lab varies between years, last year we had a good combination of masterclasses, panels, workshops and fun. Among those who gave talks were director Mike Leigh, Actors Marion Bailey and Atli Rafn Sigurðsson, Editor Valdís Óskarsdóttir, Chris McDonald President of Hot Docs International Film Festival, Peter Debruge from Variety, John DaFore form the Hollywood Reporter and Pamela Pianezza from Dazed and Confused. The participants of Reykjavik Talent Lab 2014 got guidance on how to promote their works in the international market, held pitching sessions and went on location scouting in the Southern part of Iceland.

The fee for overseas participants is ISK 90,000,- (approximately  680 $ / 600 €). The fee covers accommodation, breakfast and lunch, festival pass, parties and all seminars and discussions. Airfare is not covered but we’re working on a special rate for Talent Lab participants with our sponsors. The fee for residents is ISK 45,000,– Airfare is not covered by the festival.

Quotes from previous Talent Labs

“The Talent Lab was full of inspiring encounters, i met amazing people and went back home awesomely inspired!” – Zorana Musikic, GERMANY

“I want to express my sincerest thanks to you for allowing me to participate in the RIFF Talent Lab. It was a fantastic experience. Everyone at the festival and at the hostel made me feel welcomed. – Daniel Williams, USA

“I had the privilege of being invited to the Talent Lab in Iceland this year, and just returned from what was an unforgettable trip. There are many of these “Labs” or “Campus’” around nowadays, all inspired from the original Talent Campus hosted by the Berlinale. This version is more intimate (Talent Campus as an example has hundreds of participants) which was great because I got to know pretty much all of the people who had come from around the world to do the workshop. We got to meet Academy Award winning director James Marsh, listen to a masterclass by art house icon Bela Tarr, and although it had nothing to do with film, I even got to meet the President of Iceland and the First Lady.”- Faisal Lutchmedial, CANADA

“RIFF Talent Lab is an amazing experience from many points of view… The master classes offer the opportunity to learn but also to interact with top professionals of the main aspects of film making; the working group of young but already operating international filmmakers gives the chance first of all to meet each other and networking, but also to know better the cinematographic realities in other countries; the festival proposes a stimulating selection of movies. Last, but not least you are in such a wonderful island, so particular and beautiful that I will never forget it!!!”Arianna Rossini, Italy

“The days in Talent Lab just flew by. There was always someone interesting to talk to, a workshop to attend or a movie to watch. An intense, unforgettable experience.” Christian Fischer, Germany
