Lars von Trier (b. 1956) is a Danish screenwriter and director. He got his education at the Danish Film School and is one of Denmark’s most talked about, praised and controversial filmmakers. He has made several award-winning films since his feature film debut The Element of Crime (1984). Among his more than 100 awards and 200 nominations at film festivals worldwide, von Trier has received the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the European Film Awards, the César Awards, the Robert Awards and has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Von Trier is the founder and shareholder of the international film production company Zentropa Films, which has sold more than 350 million tickets and garnered seven Academy Award nominations.
