Similarly, the Canadian film\u00a0<strong>Hotel Silence<\/strong>\u00a0which is based on the novel Scar After\u00a0<strong>Au\u00f0i Ava \u00d3lafsd\u00f3ttir<\/strong>\u00a0received a lot of attention and the author was practically hailed as a rock star. Then the psychological thriller\u00a0<strong>All Eyes on Me<\/strong>\u00a0world premiere at RIFF this year, starring\u00a0<strong>Gudmundur Ingi Thorvalsson<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Svand\u00eds Dora Einarsdottir<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Thora Karitas Arnadottir<\/strong>Finally, mention should be made of\u00a0<strong>Duels<\/strong>\u00a0which is based on a dance piece\u00a0<strong>Erna \u00d3marsd\u00f3ttir<\/strong>\u00a0directed by the Swedish master craftsman\u00a0<strong>Jonas Akerlund<\/strong>, which was a hit in Norway recently.<\/p>\n<p>Of this year&#039;s full-length films, the following works are worth noting:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Darling \/ Beloved\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lilja Ing\u00f3lfsd\u00f3ttir, Icelandic-Norwegian.<\/p>\n<p>Mar\u00eda tries to take care of her four children with the same ambition as her career, but one day she has a falling out with her husband, who as a result files for divorce.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DuEls \/ Duels\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jonas \u00c4kerlund, Icelandic-Norwegian-Swedish.<\/p>\n<p>A dance piece composed by Erna \u00d3marsd\u00f3ttir and Damien Jalet and performed amidst the magnificent sculptures at the V\u00edgelund Museum in Oslo in a captivating artistic style.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natatorium \/ Swimming pool<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Helena Stefansdottir, Icelandic.<\/p>\n<p>When Lilja&#039;s family, who haven&#039;t seen each other in a long time, gather to celebrate her acceptance into an art group, ugly family secrets come to the surface.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aftergames<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00d3lafur \u00c1rheim, Icelandic.<\/p>\n<p>A man in search of death and a woman on the run try to make amends for their violent past with further brutality, contrary to the plans of the universe \u2013 in a deeply chilling thriller.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All Eyes on Me\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pascal Payant, Icelandic-Canadian.<\/p>\n<p>Gunnar, who prefers the friendship of horses to people, meets a Polish woman on the run from the past when he goes to the scene of the accident where his wife and son crashed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Birdlife \/ Birdlife\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heimir Freyr Hl\u00f6\u00f0versson, Icelandic.<\/p>\n<p>A documentary about J\u00f3hann \u00d3li Hilmarsson, a conservationist who is the first and only Icelander to make bird photography his profession.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boganloch \/ Single\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ben Rivers, Icelandic, Scottish, German.<\/p>\n<p>Up in the Scottish wilderness, we follow Jake from one season to the next as other characters occasionally pop up in his lonely abode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iceland, on the Trail of Democracy\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Steve Vilhelm, French.<\/p>\n<p>A new French documentary about the Icelandic household appliance revolution that emerged during the economic collapse of October 2008, its beginnings, progress and impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hotel Silence \/ \u00d6r\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L\u00e9a Pool, Canadian, based on the novel by Au\u00f0ur \u00d6va \u00d3lafsd\u00f3ttir, \u00d6r.<\/p>\n<p>Jean travels to a war-torn country and doesn&#039;t know whether he will return or what his fate will be, as he is practically lost in his own skin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Temporary Shelter\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anastasiia Bortuali, Icelandic, Swedish, produced by Helgi Felixson.<\/p>\n<p>A documentary about refugees from Ukraine and other countries who are based in \u00c1sbr\u00fa, awaiting their fate and wondering if they are meant to be in that place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When the Raven Flies\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, Icelandic, Swedish.<\/p>\n<p>A guest returns to Iceland to avenge his parents, whom he saw murdered when he was a little boy in Ireland. A 40-year-old classic Icelandic spaghetti western.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flowers\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gretar Jonsson, Icelandic.<\/p>\n<p>A relaxed and very heartwarming comedy about the human challenge of daring to follow one&#039;s heart and the confidence needed to follow one&#039;s dreams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamraborgin \u2013 Ode to Noise \/ Hamraborgin \u2013 Ode to Noise\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00dalfur Eldj\u00e1n, Patrik Ontkovic, Icelandic.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a composition by \u00dalfur that was performed in the Hall in K\u00f3pavogur, mixed with footage by Patrik Ontkovic who captures the raw beauty of Hamraborg on film.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56395\" src=\"https:\/\/riff.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/photo_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>Received a standing ovation in the Czech Republic<\/h2>\n<h1><strong>Lilja&#039;s egg-whispering emotional drama is a hit<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian-Icelandic filmmaker\u00a0<strong>Lilja Ingolfsdottir<\/strong>\u00a0has the honor of being the opening film of this year&#039;s Reykjav\u00edk International Film Festival, RIFF, which opens at H\u00e1sk\u00f3lab\u00ed\u00f3 on September 26th and runs until October 6th.<\/p>\n<p>It&#039;s safe to say that the film has been a hit, as it received a standing ovation at the prestigious Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic earlier this summer and won no fewer than five awards. &quot;The reception has been really unreal,&quot; says Lilja herself, at the Cinefest film festival in Budapest, where the film has been sold to twenty countries and is showing no signs of stopping. &quot;I&#039;m really giddy. I&#039;m being invited to festivals all over the world,&quot; she adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Darling<\/strong>\u00a0as the title of the film is in Norwegian, or\u00a0<strong>Lovely<\/strong>\u00a0Loveable, is Lilja&#039;s debut on the big screen, but the work premiered earlier this year in Oslo and it is safe to say that it attracted a lot of attention for its emotional content and the unique interpretation of the film&#039;s lead actress,\u00a0<strong>Helga Guren<\/strong>\u00a0which according to the review\u00a0<strong>Variety<\/strong>\u00a0is considered to show a gutsy performance in the role of Maria, who tries to take care of her four children with the same ambition as her career while her second husband, Sigmund, is constantly traveling. One day, however, she takes care of them so fiercely that the man asks for a divorce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe film is based on my own life experience,\u201d Lilja explains. \u201cMy husband of fifteen years and I had a marital crisis at one time, as is often the case \u2013 and that\u2019s where the model came from,\u201d she continues, but not only do they still live together, to this day, but they also have four children and work closely together; \u00d8ystein Mamen is the cinematographer of the film under discussion here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Variety<\/strong>\u00a0further says in his review of Lilja&#039;s debut work that it is &quot;an emotionally jagged drama&quot; and that the film is &quot;an unusual and clever story that seeks answers to why the second marriage in a row ends like the first, and who, if anyone, is to blame.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>She says many viewers identify with the film. &quot;They say it&#039;s absolutely true. I don&#039;t mind talking to women who tell me the film is about their daughter or their mother,&quot; says Lilja, adding that it&#039;s as if the subject matter has hit the right nerve. That&#039;s another comment.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#039;t think I&#039;ve been preparing this film for more or less six years, or since 2018,&quot; recalls Lilja, who has made dozens of short films since graduating from film studies at the London Film School and later Fama in Prague in the spring of 2001.\u00a0<strong>Darling<\/strong>\u00a0is the fourth full-length film script she has written.<\/p>\n<p>She lives in Oslo with \u00d8ystein and their children, having moved there at the age of nine from Iceland in the 1980s. She is the daughter of Tone Myklebost, who now follows her daughter&#039;s success at the Budapest Film Festival and elsewhere in Europe, and Ing\u00f3lfur Heitin Margeirsson, a journalist and writer who died in the spring of 2011.<\/p>\n<p>And she is looking forward to coming &quot;home&quot; to the Reykjav\u00edk International Film Festival later in September - and showing her countrymen this film of hers, which is one of the most talked about in Europe at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>The festival begins, as mentioned, on September 26th at the University Cinema and runs until October 6th with a selection of high-quality films and all kinds of events worth hundreds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56700\" src=\"https:\/\/riff.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/unnamed-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Favorites of big pop stars<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2>on the way to Iceland<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish director\u00a0<strong>Jonas Akerlund<\/strong>\u00a0is heading to the country next week, and he will be among the guests of honor at this year&#039;s RIFF, along with the Polish-German actress\u00a0<strong>Nastassja Kinski<\/strong>, the Greek director\u00a0<strong>Athina Tsangari<\/strong>\u00a0and then the South Korean director and Oscar winner will\u00a0<strong>Bong Joon-ho\u00a0<\/strong>honored at the festival, but all of the above will address guests and answer questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c5kerlund will arrive in Iceland with\u00a0<strong>Duels<\/strong>, or The Duel in Icelandic, which is one of the most unusual films to grace the festival this year, includes a dance film based on the popular work by the Norwegian dance group Nagelhus Schia.
