Celebrating Global Cinema: Diversity, Premieres, and Iconic Names<\/h2>\n

The <\/span>Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF)<\/b> proudly announces its lineup for the 2024 edition, showcasing <\/span>328 movies<\/b>, including <\/span>82 features<\/b> spirit <\/span>246 shorts<\/b>. A symbol of global cinema, this year's festival emphasizes gender balance with a <\/span>50.80% female<\/b> spirit <\/span>49.20% male<\/b> representation among filmmakers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival, which continues to highlight both established and emerging talents, features <\/span>47 Icelandic films<\/b>, <\/span>262 European films<\/b>, and welcomes <\/span>65 countries<\/b> from all continents, representing an impressive range of cultural narratives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Festival of Premieres and Global Perspectives<\/b><\/h2>\n

RIFF 2024 will host over <\/span>30 world premieres<\/b>, <\/span>36 Nordic premieres<\/b>, and <\/span>6 European premieres<\/b>, providing a platform for fresh voices and groundbreaking works from all over the world. Among these are critically acclaimed films from:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Other highly anticipated films included <\/span>Super Happy Forever<\/span><\/i> (Opening Film, Critics' Week, Venice International Film Festival 2024), <\/span>The Substance<\/span><\/i> (Best Film at Toronto's Midnight Madness section), and the <\/span>4k restoration<\/b> too <\/span>Wim Wenders<\/b>'classic' <\/span>Paris, Texas<\/span><\/i> (Palme d'Or Winner, 1984), a screening that will count with the presence of Nastassja Kinski<\/strong>, who will be one of our honorary guests, an award that will be given by G\u00edsli \u00d6rn Gar\u00f0arsson on opening night ceremony, September 26th. Other honorary guests this year are Greek directors Athina Rachel Tsangari<\/strong>, Swedish director Jonas Akerlund<\/strong> and last but not least the South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho<\/strong>, who due to last minute cancellation will join us virtually.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Spotlight on Resistance: A New Section<\/b><\/h2>\n

    A special highlight for 2024 is the new section, <\/span>"To the Resistance,"<\/b> dedicated to films that confront social, political, and personal struggles. It will feature works from renowned filmmakers such as <\/span>Ben Rivers <\/b>spirit <\/span>Sergei Loznitsa<\/b> and some of the most outstanding titles of 2024 like the Berlinale Best Documentary Winner <\/span>No Other Land<\/b> and Rotterdam sensation <\/span>78 Days, <\/b>reflecting the festival's commitment to powerful, impactful storytelling<\/span><\/p>\n

    Renowned Names and Breakthrough Talents<\/b><\/h2>\n

For example, Oscar winner director of recent arthouse hit <\/span>Parasite<\/b>,\u00a0 <\/span>Bong Jong-hoo<\/b> will be awarded with the Creative Excellence Award in a Ceremony post the screening of the Black and White version of his 2009 masterpiece <\/span>Mother<\/b>. This version, chosen by the director himself, will be a unique experience as this version has rarely been shown outside South Korea. As well, as every year at RIFF, Indigenous stories will also be honored bringing a rich tapestry of cultural diversity and unique storytelling perspectives to the forefront.<\/span><\/p>\n
