RIFF \u2013 Reykjav\u00edk International Film Festival \u2013 is unveiling a new visual identity for the 2025 edition.\nThe creative duo Krot&Krass, comprising Bj\u00f6rn Loki and Elsa J\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir, is behind the new look, which can now be seen on RIFF\u2019s website, social media, and beyond. This year\u2019s festival takes place from September 25th to October 5th.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever we begin to work on a new project, we start by thinking about the feeling of the project,\u201d Elsa explains when asked about the concept behind RIFF 2025\u2019s look.\n\u201cIn this case, the design reflects movement and flight \u2013 it resonates with the idea of cinema as a kind of alternate reality you can fly into.\u201d\nThe design by Elsa and Loki will appear in various forms leading up to and during the festival \u2013 online, on merchandise, and as environmental art, among others.<\/p>\n

Designers as free as puffins<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a real joy to work on this project for the Reykjav\u00edk International Film Festival,\u201d adds Loki.\n\u201cFrom the moment we took it on, we knew it would be a fun challenge. Every year, a designer gets complete freedom to create something new.\nWe work partly with the puffin \u2013 RIFF\u2019s iconic mascot \u2013 but apart from that, we have full artistic freedom.\nWe\u2019re free as puffins.\u201d<\/p>\n

The only requirement? It must be something new.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very happy to have these creative minds \u2013 Elsa and Loki from Krot&Krass \u2013 join us at RIFF this year,\u201d says Hr\u00f6nn Marin\u00f3sd\u00f3ttir, RIFF\u2019s festival director.\n\u201cRIFF is, by nature, an artistic and imaginative event, so it\u2019s important to bring in people who are inventive and full of ideas to create something fresh for the festival each year.\nThe only rule we set is that the result should be new and different \u2013 and Krot&Krass have absolutely delivered.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A design that echoes traditional Icelandic carving script<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Krot&Krass duo has been involved in a variety of projects in recent years. In addition to teaching at the Iceland University of the Arts, Flateyri Folk School, and Brei\u00f0holt College, they\u2019ve worked on public artworks and turned their ideas into reliefs and sculptures.\n\nElsa and Loki are also drawn to\u00a0\u201ch\u00f6f\u00f0aletur,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0a uniquely Icelandic ornamental lettering style often used in woodcarving \u2013 arguably Iceland\u2019s only native typeface.\nAlthough often hard to read, it carries a sense of mystery that the duo has reflected in the typography created for RIFF 2025.\nIt feels especially fitting, as this style \u2013 much like the magic of cinema \u2013 taps into the imagination.<\/p>\n
