The Reykjav\u00edk International Film Festival proudly announces that the feature film The Wizard of the Kremlin will be this year\u2019s closing film at RIFF. The story follows a quiet man, one whom few would have considered destined for greatness. Yet, when all is said and done, his contribution proves decisive for the fate of an empire\u2014and of the world itself.\n
<\/br>\nWe are in Russia in the years after 1990. The Soviet Union has collapsed, and the Cold War order has been upended. Russia is at a starting point of sorts, though it is impossible to tell whether it is heading toward reform or chaos. Avant-garde artist Vadim Baranov is highly skilled in his field, but no one\u2014except perhaps an obscure yet shrewd newcomer to politics with a shadowy background in the secret service, one Vladimir Putin\u2014could have foreseen that Baranov would harness his creative force in service of the state. He would become the Kremlin\u2019s most important image-maker and master of spin. It was his hand that crafted Russia\u2019s new image behind the scenes and, more importantly, paved the way for Putin from the FSB headquarters to the Kremlin. The rest, Russians\u2014and the entire world\u2014know well.\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Many years later, after Baranov has lived quietly for decades, aged and forgotten, he finally agrees to recount this fateful period and the sinister machinery that fueled Putin\u2019s political rise. What emerges is not only the confession of a remorseful man but also a striking reflection on how public opinion can be manipulated with sleight of hand, how power seduces and corrupts, and, in the end, where the true responsibility lies.\n
<\/br>\nThe Wizard of the Kremlin is a political thriller directed by Olivier Assayas, known for Personal Shopper (2016), Clouds of Sils Maria (2014), and Wasp Network (2019). Paul Dano stars as the spin doctor Baranov, remembered for his dual role as the twins Paul and Eli Sunday in There Will Be Blood (2007). Vladimir Putin is portrayed by none other than Jude Law, with additional leading roles by Alicia Vikander, Jeffrey Wright, and Tom Sturridge.\n
