Josie’s childhood home has always been open to guests and the doors are never locked. Josie has never liked the people or the noise that much though, and sometimes doesn’t even feel like a part of her own family. When Josie finally gets to be home alone for the first time, she thinks it’s going to be the best day of her life. She soon realizes however, that her home might be too quiet on her own.
Life is much more about inconspicuous moments, tiny pockets of happiness, than about large ceremonies and milestones. It’s not my tenth birthday itself, but the night after my birthday that I remember. Sitting, wired and tired, at our kitchen table with my mom and two sisters, all four of us holding a fork and eating leftover birthday cake straight out of the box, telling stupid jokes and laughing at them too, like a real family.
It’s the way my grandmother made tea, the way horsing around with the boy next door suddenly started to feel different, and it’s being home alone for the first time when you didn’t expect to be. Those are the best moments, the greatest stories. That’s what I think life is about.
