New Visions

In New Visions, eight up-and-coming directors present their first or second feature films and compete for our main prize, the Golden Puffin. These films challenge cinematic conventions and pave the way for tomorrow’s cinema.

Open Seas

Every year a few distinct films make the headlines on the festival circuit. These are exciting - and sometimes masterful - works, some by established filmmakers, others by newcomers. Here we have the cream of this past year’s crop.

A glimpse of Iceland in EFA

EFA, The European Film Awards, will be awarded in Iceland this forthcoming December and RIFF will take part in the awards ceremony. It can therefore truly be said that RIFF has earned its place among the world’s leading film festivals.

A Different Tomorrow

Can we sustain our way of living indefinitely or must we change our lifestyles? Can our planet handle prolonged maltreatment? Do we behave ethically towards one another? The films in A Different Tomorrow shed light on environmental and humanitarian topics because, sometimes, the right film can change the world.

Documentaries

Our documentary programme aims to educate and inform, but also to mediate knowledge in new and exciting ways. A great documentary ignites our imaginations and can have a profound impact on its viewer and society by presenting unexpected viewpoints or new information.

Get Inside an Artist's Mind

In the program Get Inside an Artist’s Mind, viewers go on a journey through the creations of influential artists - whether they are masters of design and architecture, controversial filmmakers, famous photographers or musicians from all over the world.

Midnight Chills

Horror movies and genre cinema have long since become a regular part of festival programming all over the world and now RIFF puts these films in the spotlight. We emphasize horror from different parts of the world to exhibit the variety of horror in all its blood-spitting glory.

Arctic and Beyond

In the program Arctic and Beyond, viewers are taken on cinematic journeys that explore the landscapes and experiences from communities living in the northernmost regions of our planet.

Sámi Program

This year, RIFF has a special program for films about Sámi people and their lives. The Sámi people are an indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting Sámi, which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia.

Icelandic Panorama

RIFF is the meeting point of Icelandic and international cinema. Icelandic Panorama presents new films that have strong Icelandic connections.

Icelandic Shorts III (Student competition)

Icelandic Shorts III includes films from students in filmmaking, and our jury awards a special student award for the best short film.

International Shorts I

EFA Shorts Program I

EFA, The European Film Awards, will be held in for the first time in Reykjavik in December 2020. This is RIFF’s selection of last year’s EFA nominated shorts.

EFA Shorts Program II

EFA, The European Film Awards, will be held in for the first time in Reykjavik in December 2020. This is RIFF’s selection of last year’s EFA nominated shorts.

EFA Young Audience Awards

The EFA Young Audience Award is an official category of the European Film Awards, presenting three European films to 12-14 year old audiences across Europe, who watch the nominated films and act as a jury, voting for the winner. This year all films were screened online and My Brother Chases Dinosaurs (Mio Fratello Rincorre i Dinosauri) by director Stefano Cipani was voted as the best film.

The One Minutes

The One Minutes is a global network devoted to the moving image. Since 1998, The One Minutes has produced and distributed more than 17 thousand video works by artists from more than 120 countries. RIFF is grateful for its creative collaboration with The One Minutes the last few years.
