Sigurjón Sighvatsson Surprised with RIFF Lifetime Achievement Award

The award ceremony took place in connection with a special double screening of David Lynch’s works, held to mark the 40th anniversary of Propaganda Films.

The Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) delighted filmmaker Sigurjón Sighvatsson with a surprise presentation of its Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to the art of cinema. The award ceremony took place in connection with a special double screening of David Lynch’s works, held to mark the 40th anniversary of Propaganda Films.

RIFF’s honorary award recipients are usually announced several weeks in advance, but this time the festival decided to keep the presentation secret and surprise Sigurjón. The surprise was a resounding success, and the producer greatly appreciated this unexpected recognition of his long and distinguished career.

Sigurjón attended a screening of the Twin Peaks pilot episode and a new 4K restoration of Wild at Heart — two landmark works from his collaboration with director David Lynch. The evening thus became both a celebration of cinema and a personal tribute to one of Iceland’s most influential film producers on the international stage.

Forty Years Since the Founding of Propaganda Films

In 2026, it will be 40 years since Sigurjón co-founded Propaganda Films with several partners. The company played a major role in shaping the visual language of film, television, advertising and music videos, creating an environment in which visionary artists could pursue their own creative visions.

The collaboration between Sigurjón and David Lynch is a prime example of the artistic daring that defined the company. Lynch was both a friend and a frequent collaborator of Sigurjón, and the two works screened at RIFF last night stand as a testament to the creative energy of their partnership.

Two Groundbreaking Works

The Twin Peaks pilot episode and the film Wild at Heart first reached audiences just weeks apart in the spring of 1990. Both works had a far-reaching impact and hold a special place in Lynch’s body of work.

With Twin Peaks, Lynch opened a new chapter in television history. The series captivated millions of viewers with its blend of mystery, eccentric characters, humour and horror, demonstrating that television could be a medium for storytelling as personal and ambitious as cinema.

Wild at Heart, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, combines the road movie, romance and Southern Gothic with pitch-black humour. At RIFF’s screening, audiences had the opportunity to experience the film in a new 4K restoration, with Sigurjón in attendance.
