RIFF mourns the passing of acclaimed Iranian-French filmmaker, graphic novelist, and human rights advocate Marjane Satrapi, who has died at the age of 56.
Best known for her groundbreaking autobiographical work Persepolis, Satrapi was one of the most distinctive and influential artistic voices of her generation, using her work to explore themes of identity, exile, freedom, and resistance.
Satrapi was a special guest of the Reykjavík International Film Festival in 2012, where she received RIFF’s Emerging Master Award in recognition of her remarkable contribution to contemporary cinema.
During her visit to Reykjavík, she presented her work and met festival audiences, leaving a lasting impression on all who encountered her.
