This year’s RIFF Lit Flick screening is Pride and Prejudice, which took the world by storm when it was released in 2005 and continues to be hugely popular today. Like the novel it is based on, the film, directed by Joe Wright, has become a timeless classic. The film received four Academy Award nominations, including a nomination for Keira Knightley for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet.
The screening is presented in collaboration with the Jane Austen Fan Club of Iceland. Kristín Linda Jónsdóttir, psychologist and chair of the club, will explore Jane Austen and ask: What is it about her work that continues to resonate with audiences today? Literary scholar and translator of Pride and Prejudice, Silja Aðalsteinsdóttir, will discuss the novel.

BELOVED is a tender, visually powerful story of love’s fragility and longing. In a small coastal town, Asle and Gerd find each other and become parents to a boy. However their happiness is brief. As a sailor, Asle is drawn to escape, leaving Gerd alone with the child as distance grows between them. Told in Fosse’s minimalist style, through silence, glances and landscape, the story rests on deep compassion for three lives, and asks how much distance love can endure before it breaks.
